Johnny Hodgson Speech At the Celebration of Fernando Hodgson Valery Life, October 14, 2006
Fernando
Hodgson entered this life in Bluefields the 30th
of September 1941 His primary education was received at the Catholic San
Jose School conducted under the auspices of the La Salle Christian Brothers. His
secondary education was at the Catholic Cristobal Colon Institute also conducted
under the auspices of the La Salle Christian brothers, where he acquired the
degree of private accountant. As a
student he was very intelligent and apt. His relations in regular school,
Sunday school, and other social meetings were always of a gentleman and good conduct. He was bountifully blest with the gift
of excellent human relation. I
will not talk about his prowess in base
ball or what he did for sports in general because from here we will
go to the stadium and I am sure they will be sharing details of his life as an
athlete. Just
like his brothers and sisters he was a dutiful
son, a fine
brother, a very responsible
father, a good friend, uncle, cousin, family a nice comrade, that participated in
so many progressive civil organization already mentioned, for the betterment of
the Caribbean Coast People. When
Fernando finished studying at the Cristobal Colon high school he went to work at
the Metallic mine in Rosita and learn about all the gold
that we as Caribbean Coast had. Then he came back to Bluefields and
started working in the fishing industry, where as a result of his excellent
performance he was continuously promoted until he got to be the General Manager
of the largest fishing company in
Nicaragua. Everywhere he worked he got recognition for his excellent
performance. From all the places he worked he was able to step
out with his head high. That is
one of the important legacy that
Fernando left for us the people of the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua. This is an example
for us to follow. In
the 1980´s when the Ministry of Fisheries was created, Fernando was considered,
selected and named Vice Minister of fisheries because of his leadership, excellent job
and human relation performed as worker and General Manager in the fishing
industry. As worker and boss Fernando was Strict but
Gentle, When Fernando was in such a high
position, the people that worked with him were treated more like comrades than subordinates.
He always tell them, We have to be punctual, we have do our job the right way
so people in and out can see and know that we the people from the Caribbean
Coast can do the job best. He was never
a conformist; he never wanted our job to be just good, he always say we have
to do the best. Fernando was
already a successful business man over 50 years of age when we got universities
in Bluefields, but his will of getting the tools to do the best for the coast
sent him to study the career of Public accountant and finances at a professional
level at the BICU where hi graduated a few years ago. Fernando
Hodgson was not only a dedicated good student and worker; he was an entrepreneur.
When he decided to become a businessman, a self employed person, a man that
was going to be his own boss, he got into some of the traditional business like
retail shop and hotel services, but also into new area of business like money
delivery (remittances) cable television, water processing,
agriculture and even the high quality fry chicken business (in fact he
was about to inaugurate this building where we are now) Fernando was a hard
working man, he came from below he
didn’t inherited riches or properties, all he got is what he worked so very
hard for. He performed so well as a
businessman that he was elected by the organized business people of Bluefields
to be the President of the Chamber of
Commerce. He did it so well that when his term was up they asked him to be
the advisor of the chamber, and this he did until the day of his death. Fernando
Hodgson wasn’t perfect, none of us are, but when he assumed any responsibility
he performed to the best of his ability. ¿You know why he worked so hard and did things so very well?
He worked with dedication so that we his family, friends, love
ones and coastlanders in general could feel proud. But you most not
confuse proudness with arrogance,
Fernando did not feel better than others, and he did not want us as
Caribbean Coast people to wrongly feel like we are better or less than others.
We may be different, but just as good as others. That is why we must always
remember the # 1 principle of our Autonomy UNITY
IN DIVERSITY (if we want to build the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua that Fernando
Hodgson was struggling for, We need to work
to the best of our ability to achieve unity in
diversity.) The Caribbean
coast of our dreams is going to be a reality when we begin to work in unity …mískito,
sumo, rama, garífuna , mestizos and creoles….. Anglicans, Moravians,
Catholic, Evangelist, Adventist, Jehovah witnesses, Baptist, and all other
religious denomination, …Liberals, Yátamas, Conservatives,
Sandinistas, and other political denominations to build unity in
diversity and reconciliation.. For
65 years Fernando was running ahead of us, leading
us with the flag of Caribbean coast proudness. On Tuesday the 10th
of October he was call out of this world by the
highest master.
The flag that he was carrying high is down. The best recognition, the best
way to value Fernando Hodgson example in its real dimension, one of the best
way to celebrate Fernando Hodgson life is to pick
up the flag that he was carrying and continue to keep it high. Continue
to do the things that make the Caribbean Coast people to feel proud.
We
have lost a great man, so we mourn,
the family and friends share and receive condolences
(my condolence to the Family and to the Caribbean coast people) all are sad
and we can even cry but we can’t
stay just with the mourning. We have to rescue all the good deeds and the
good example that Fernando Hodgson gave us in life. That is how he would like us
to celebrate his life. We need to do this, then Fernando Hodgson will keep
living in our hearts. MAY

Mano Criminal en Muerte De Empresario
Lic. Saludes Lic. Denis Bermudez,
